Chavela Vargas

Chavela Vargas was a Costa Rican-born Mexican singer and actor whose voice became central to ranchera, bolero, and Latin American song. Her stark performances of La Llorona and other Mexican repertory turned restraint, roughness, and emotional directness into a powerful public style, later reinforced by her appearance in the film Frida.
