Pi for Piano in A minor
Pi bike designed by Martijn Koomen and Tadas Maksimovas
Music Period: 21st Century Classical
Country: USA
Everyone knows that Pi is a mathematical symbol representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, but what has made the number fascinating and mind-boggling for centuries is the fact that its decimal representation never ends and its pattern cannot be identified.
As composers embark on their eternal quest for ingenious and original pieces, many are inspired by the use of mathematical constants in music.
In order to help himself remember the digits of Pi, composer David Macdonald decided to turn each digit into a note on the A minor scale to play on the piano. He claims that now he can hear the melody in his head which allows him to recall the numbers in order. He included a harmony, played with left hand, in order to round out the melody while the right hand plays the Pi digits music scheme.
