Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was an Indian vocalist, born on February 4, 1922, in Karnataka. Joshi was known for his rendition of the khayal style of singing, as well as devotional music like bhajans and abhangs. He was instrumental in organizing the annual Sawai Gandharva Music Festival held in homage to his guru Sawai Gandharva. Joshi belonged to the Kirana gharana tradition of Hindustani Classical Music. His concerts were known for their popularity, and he toured across countries like Afghanistan, Italy, France, Canada, and the USA. In 2009, Joshi was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. Joshi passed away on January 24, 2011.
