Abbey Lincoln was an American jazz vocalist, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist, born on August 6, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. She began her music career with her debut album, Abbey Lincoln's Affair - A Story of a Girl in Love, and went on to record many albums for Riverside Records. She contributed to the civil rights movement and was featured on Max Roach's 1960 recording, We Insist! She received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award in 2003. Lincoln was also an actress and appeared in several movies and TV shows. She died on August 14, 2010, at the age of 80.
