Arturo Márquez is a Mexican composer and orchestra director, born on December 20, 1950 in Alamos, Sonora. Márquez began composing intuitively while studying violin, tuba, trombone, and piano in Los Angeles. He later moved back to Mexico and studied with Carlos Barajas and José Luis Arcaraz at the National Conservatory of Mexico. He also studied composition with Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras, Héctor Quintanar, Federico Ibarra, and Raúl Pavón at the National Institute of Fine Arts. His compositions fuse Latin music, jazz, and contemporary music. Márquez has won various awards, including the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in Mexico in 2009. Notable pieces include Danzón No. 2 and Conga del Fuego Nuevo.
