KANJIRA

The kanjira is a small South Indian frame drum used in Carnatic music. Held in one hand and played with the other, it can produce dry snaps, bending pitch, and fast rhythmic dialogue with mridangam, violin, voice, and other instruments. Its role in Indian classical performance is often compact but intense, carrying the logic of tala through gesture, pressure, and improvisation.
