Agustín Pío Barrios Mangoré was a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer from Paraguay who is considered one of the greatest performers and most prolific composers of the guitar. Born in 1885, he showed an interest in music and literature as a child and learned to play the guitar before his teens. Barrios composed over 100 original works and arranged another 200 works by other composers. He was famed for his phenomenal performances, both live and on gramophone recordings. His notable pieces include La Catedral, a magnum opus, which is widely considered one of his best works. Barrios died in 1944 at the age of 59.
