Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco (1655-1731) was an Italian inventor and instrument maker famous for inventing the piano. Cristofori was recruited to work for Prince Ferdinando de Medici in 1688, at the age of 33, and became responsible for maintaining and transporting instruments, inventing new instruments, and restoring valuable older harpsichords. He was a highly innovative inventor who was paid a higher salary than his predecessor and was expected to turn over the fruits of his experimentation to the court. His notable works include inventing the piano in the early 1700s, which marked the birth of the modern piano. Cristofori’s creations marked an important era in the evolution of music.
