Bill Monroe (1911-1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter who is widely regarded as the "Father of Bluegrass." Monroe's music combined elements of Scottish bagpipes, old-time fiddling, Methodist and Holiness hymns, blues, and jazz, creating a unique high lonesome sound. Notable pieces from his repertoire include Uncle Pen, Blue Moon of Kentucky, and Raw Hide. Monroe's band members included Cleo Davis, Art Wooten, and Amos Garren.
