Cándido López was an Argentine soldier and painter known for his paintings in the Naïve style, particularly his historical scenes from the Paraguayan War. López began his career as a daguerreotypist in 1858 but soon took up painting as well. He toured the small cities and villages of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe Province taking photographs and painting landscapes and pictures of military camps. During the Paraguayan War, he enlisted and painted between battles. At the Battle of Curupayty, his right wrist was shattered and his arm was amputated above the elbow. He returned to painting with his left hand, documenting war scenes. Despite his disability, he became an adept artist and created valuable paintings that documented this dark period in Argentina's history.
