Arvid Järnefelt (1861-1932) was a Finnish judge, writer, and one of the founders of the cultural magazine Valvoja. He became a famous author in the late 19th century and wrote psychologically insightful novels, short stories, and memoirs. Järnefelt founded the newspaper Päivälehti in 1889 with his friends Eero Erkko and Juhani Aho, which was succeeded by Helsingin Sanomat in 1904. His notable play Kuolema (Death) had incidental music composed by his brother-in-law Jean Sibelius, which includes the famous Valse triste.
