Abdullah Ibrahim, born Adolph Johannes Brand on October 9, 1934, is a South African pianist, composer, and bandleader. His music is influenced by various genres including African songs, gospel, ragas, and jazz, and he is considered the leading figure in the subgenre of Cape Jazz. Ibrahim is known for Mannenberg, a notable anti-apartheid anthem. He moved to New York City in the 1960s to escape apartheid and returned to South Africa in the 1970s before moving back to New York City again. Over the decades he has toured the world extensively, appearing at major venues either as a solo artist or with other renowned musicians. Ibrahim is the father of underground rapper Jean Grae.
