The bandoneon is a type of concertina popular in Argentina and Uruguay, and a staple instrument in most tango ensembles. Originally intended for religious and popular music, German and Italian emigrants brought the bandoneon to Argentina around 1870, where it was adopted into the nascent genre of tango music. By 1910, bandoneons were being produced in Germany expressly for the Argentine and Uruguayan markets, with 25,000 shipped to Argentina in 1930 alone.
