Bedřich Smetana was a Czech composer born on March 2, 1824. Smetana's notable pieces include the opera The Bartered Bride and the symphonic poem Vltava, part of a cycle of six works titled Má vlast. He studied music with his father and two teachers in Plzeň before attending the Prague Conservatory. In 1848, Smetana founded a music school and wrote his first nationalist symphony in response to the Prague uprising. He left Prague to direct the Gothenburg Philharmonic Society in Sweden and later returned to Prague in 1861 to promote Czech music. Despite suffering from deafness, Smetana continued composing until his death in 1884.
