Consuelo Velázquez Torres (1916-2005) was a Mexican concert pianist and composer known for her famous Mexican ballads, including Bésame mucho, Amar y vivir, and Cachito. She began studying music at a young age and later obtained a degree in teaching music and concert piano. As a composer, Velázquez's work was influenced by the "naturaleza romántica" genre, emphasizing nature's beauty and strength. Her most well-known piece—Bésame mucho—gained international recognition and has been performed by numerous artists worldwide. Velázquez also had a career as an actress and composed music for Mexican movies. She received the National Prize for Science and Arts in 1989 and was honored with the Award of Peace from the United Nations.
