Don Azpiazu—a Cuban orchestra director active in the 1920s and 1930s—led one of the pioneering bands in New York that incorporated Cuban percussion instruments. His ensemble gained significant popularity in the United States. Notably, his orchestra, Habana Casino, recorded El manisero, a monumental international hit in Cuban music history. The band featured notable musicians such as Julio Cueva, Mario Bauzá, and Antonio Machín. To expand his musical style to English-speaking audiences, Azpiazu enlisted American singers like Bob Burke and Chick Bullock.
