Julian Edwin Adderley—known as Cannonball Adderley—was an American jazz alto saxophonist, born in Tampa, Florida in 1928. Adderley is best known for the soul jazz hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy which became a crossover hit on the pop and R&B charts in 1966. He worked with Miles Davis appearing on the seminal records Milestones and Kind of Blue. Adderley formed his own group with his brother Nat Adderley in 1955 and other notable band members included saxophonist Yusef Lateef and pianist Joe Zawinul. Adderley was also an educator and recorded The Child's Introduction to Jazz in 1961. He died in 1975 aged 46.
