Alfred Francis Hill was an Australian-New Zealand composer, conductor, and teacher who was born in Melbourne in 1869. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Gustav Schreck, Hans Sitt, and Oscar Paul. Hill returned to New Zealand and became the director of the Wellington Orchestral Society. He also worked as a violin teacher, chamber musician, and choral conductor. In 1915–16 he co-founded the NSW State Conservatorium of Music and became its first Professor of Theory and Composition. Hill wrote more than 500 compositions, including 13 symphonies, eight operas, numerous concertos, a mass, 17 string quartets, and 72 piano pieces. One of his notable pieces is Waiata Poi. Hill died at the age of 90 in 1960.
