Afel Bocoum is a Malian singer and guitarist, born in 1955. He started his career as a member of ASCO, Ali Farka Touré's group, and often regarded Touré as his mentor. Alkibar, Bocoum's band, is made up of two acoustic guitars, a one-string fiddle, a lute, calabash percussion, and two female singers as well as male singers. Bocoum comments on contemporary Malian society through his music, often singing in his native language, Sonrai. Bocoum cites Jorge Ben Jor, Mamadou Doumbia, Salif Keita, John Lee Hooker, and Mongo Santamaría as his musical influences. In 2002, Bocoum collaborated with the Blur singer Damon Albarn on the successful Mali Music album.
