Booker Ervin
Booker Telleferro Ervin II was an American tenor saxophonist known for his association with bassist Charles Mingus. Born in Denison, Texas in 1930, Ervin played the trombone as a child and later taught himself to play the tenor saxophone during his time in the Air Force. He studied music at Berklee College of Music before moving to New York City in 1958 where he worked with Mingus and played in jam sessions. Ervin also led his own quartet and recorded for Prestige Records, Blue Note Records, and Pacific Jazz. He died in New York City in 1970 from kidney disease.
