Cornelis Saftleven (c. 1607-1681) was a Dutch painter known for his diverse range of genres and subjects. Notable for his rural genre scenes, he also painted portraits, landscapes, history paintings, scenes of Hell, satires, and illustrations of proverbs. Saftleven came from an artistic family and learned to paint from his father and brothers. He trained in Rotterdam and Antwerp, with Peter Paul Rubens even adding figures to his paintings. His works included portraits, peasant interiors, and depictions of animals, with his images of hell and the Temptation of St Anthony being particularly noteworthy.
