Tonicization

Tonicization is a short harmonic process in which a chord other than the main tonic is briefly treated as if it were a temporary key center. It often uses a secondary dominant or leading-tone chord to point toward that goal. Unlike full modulation, tonicization usually passes quickly, adding direction and color without leaving the original key for long.
