Carlos Saura
Carlos Saura Atarés (4 January 1932 – 10 February 2023) was a Spanish film director, photographer, and writer known for his contributions to the film industry. He was active from 1955 to 2023, spanning over half a century. Alongside Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar, he is considered one of Spain's most renowned filmmakers. Saura's early films were neorealist, but he later incorporated metaphors and symbolism to circumvent Spanish censorship. In the 1980s, he gained recognition for his Flamenco trilogy, combining dramatic content with flamenco dance forms in films like Blood Wedding, Carmen, and El amor brujo. Throughout his career, he received multiple awards and nominations, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film for Carmen (1983) and Tango (1998).
