Aretha Franklin
Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist, known as the "Queen of Soul". She began her career singing gospel in her father's church in Detroit and signed with Columbia Records at 18. Franklin's commercial success began with Atlantic Records in 1966 with hits such as Respect, Chain of Fools, and Natural Woman. She recorded acclaimed albums such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967), Amazing Grace (1972), and Sparkle (1976). Franklin left Atlantic in 1979 and signed with Arista Records, releasing successful albums such as Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985) and Aretha (1986). She won 18 Grammy Awards and was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Franklin was posthumously awarded a special citation by the Pulitzer Prize jury in 2019 and inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2020.
