Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was an American singer born in Philadelphia in 1915. She is regarded as one of the greatest jazz and blues singers of all time. Billie's father was a banjo player who left her and her mother when she was just a baby. Her mother worked as a cleaner but struggled to support Billie alone, so Billie was raised by her grandparents and a cruel cousin. She began singing in clubs in Harlem at the age of fifteen and was noticed by producer John Hammond, who helped her get recording sessions. Billie's notable pieces include Strange Fruit, God Bless the Child, and Fine and Mellow. She died in 1959 at the age of 44.
