Alexander Trocchi was a Scottish novelist and editor born in 1925. After attending the University of Glasgow, he moved to Paris, where he edited the literary magazine Merlin, which published works by Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, and Pablo Neruda, among others. Trocchi wrote most of his novels for Olympia Press under pen names such as Frances Lengel and Carmencita de las Lunas. He struggled with heroin addiction and attended a live television debate on drug abuse while injecting himself, which led to his smuggling over the Canada-US border to avoid a jail sentence. Trocchi’s notable works include Cain’s Book and My Life and Loves: Fifth Volume, heavily rewritten by Trocchi based on autobiographical material by Irish-American writer Frank Harris.
