Andreas Hammerschmidt was a German Bohemian composer and organist of the early to the middle Baroque era, born in 1611 or 1612. He was one of the most significant and popular composers of sacred music in Germany in the middle 17th century, known as the "Orpheus of Zittau." Hammerschmidt's notable works include his motets, chorale monody, masses, and suites of dances influenced by the English style. He was an organist all of his life, and no organ music of his has survived.
