Anthony Holborne was a renowned composer of music for lute, cittern, and instrumental consort during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. He was born around 1545 and was possibly the same person who entered Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1562. He claimed to be in the service of Queen Elizabeth on the title page of both of his books. He died of a "cold" in November 1602. His compositions were held in high regard by contemporaries, including John Dowland. The largest surviving collection of his works, consisting of 65 compositions, is the Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs. One of his compositions, The Fairie Round, was included on the Voyager Golden Record.
