Artur Balsam was a renowned Polish-born American classical pianist and pedagogue, born in Warsaw in 1906. He won the Berlin International Piano Competition in 1930 and settled in New York City after the rise of the Nazis. Balsam became a sought-after accompanist for international artists and recorded the complete works of Mozart and Haydn sonatas. He was also invited to record six of Mozart's piano concertos with the BBC Symphony for the composer's bicentenary in 1956. Balsam was considered the dean of chamber music performance and teaching in the US and served on the faculties of Eastman School of Music, Boston University, and Manhattan School of Music. He died at the age of 88 due to pneumonia.
