August Wilhelm Leu, also known as August Leu the Elder, was a German landscape painter of the Düsseldorf School. Active in the mid-19th century, he studied under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and traveled extensively, particularly to Norway, Switzerland, and Italy. Leu's landscapes were characterized by a romantic interpretation of alpine nature, masterful technique, vivid color, and well-calculated lighting. He paid particular attention to the foreground details. Some of his notable works include Norwegian Waterfall with Pine Forest, Sognefjord at Noon, and Oeschinensee at Kandersteg in the Canton of Bern. Leu was honored with the title of Royal Professor and received a large golden medal from a Berlin art exhibition.
