Bob Weir is an American singer and guitarist known for being the rhythm guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead. He was born on October 16, 1947, in San Francisco, and started playing the guitar at the age of 13 after failed attempts with the piano and trumpet. Weir struggled in school due to undiagnosed dyslexia and was expelled from every school he attended. He formed the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia after a chance encounter in a music store in 1963. Weir has experimented with slide guitar and was influenced by McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, and Rev. Gary Davis. He has also released solo albums, played with other bands, and formed his own band—Ratdog—after the death of Garcia in 1995.
