Charles Avison was an English composer active during the Baroque and Classical periods. Born in Newcastle, he served as a church organist and composed in a style that blended Baroque and Classical elements. Avison is renowned for his 12 Concerti Grossi after Scarlatti and his Essay on Musical Expression, the first published English music criticism. Avison's writings often expressed strong opinions, particularly in his critique of composers. His music continues to be performed by the Avison Ensemble using period instruments.
