Sir Charles Barnard Groves was an English conductor known for his wide-ranging repertoire and support for contemporary composers and young conductors. Active from the 1940s to the 1990s, Groves conducted various orchestras, including the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He was associated with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted the Last Night of the Proms in the 1970s. Groves served as president of the National Youth Orchestra and made guest appearances with orchestras worldwide. He championed British composers and was the first to direct a complete cycle of Mahler's symphonies in Britain.
