Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright, poet, and theorist of theatre born in Augsburg on February 10, 1898. He was the founder of the Berliner Ensemble in 1949 and was a renowned dramaturg and director at Deutsches Theater in Berlin from 1924-1926. Brecht went into exile in 1933, fearing persecution from the Nazis, and lived in several countries including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the United States. Brecht is most famous for his play Mother Courage and the opera The Threepenny Opera which he wrote in collaboration with composer Kurt Weill.
