Buena Vista Social Club was a popular social club in Havana, Cuba, known for dance and music. In the 1990s, almost 50 years after the club's closure, a musical group was formed under the same name. It featured traditional Cuban musicians including former club members and was led by Juan de Marcos González and Ry Cooder. Their recording Buena Vista Social Club was an international success followed by a performance in Amsterdam in 1998 and a concert at Carnegie Hall, which was recorded and featured in the acclaimed documentary Buena Vista Social Club by German filmmaker Wim Wenders. The group's success generated interest in traditional Cuban and Latin American music worldwide.
