The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1853 by Ferenc Erkel, is Hungary's oldest orchestra. It is organized by musicians of the Opera House and directed by the chairman-conductor and the board of directors. The ensemble's main concert venue is the Hungarian State Opera House where they give around ten concerts annually. Many famous composers have conducted with the orchestra, including Liszt, Brahms, Dvořák, and Mahler. The orchestra has made numerous concert tours to other European countries, the United States, and Japan. Landmark events in the orchestra's history include the world premiere of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 Titan and the first complete performance in Budapest of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor.
