Frans Brüggen helped bring the recorder and period-instrument performance into modern concert life. The Dutch musician became known as a recorder virtuoso, conductor, and founder of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. His work connected Baroque and Classical repertory with a historically informed style that favored speech-like phrasing and lean orchestral color.
