Franz Berwald

Franz Berwald’s music gave Sweden one of its most original Romantic symphonic voices. A composer and violinist, he wrote four symphonies, chamber music, concert pieces, and operas while remaining underrecognized during much of his lifetime. Works such as the Sinfonie sérieuse show a lean, surprising orchestral imagination outside the main German-centered canon.
