The earliest-known example of a metal trumpet dates to 2000 years BCE. Egyptian in origin, it was a military signal instrument sounding only one or two notes. Later forms included the natural trumpet of the 16th–18th centuries and, following the invention of valves in about 1815, the modern valve trumpet.
The trumpet has found its use in every genre of music. Famous jazz trumpeters include Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Harry James, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Miles Davis, Herb Alpert, Chuck Mangione, Wynton Marsalis. Prominent classical trumpet players are Maurice Andre, Thomas Reiner, Rafael Mendez, David Krauss, Bud Herseth, Phil Driscoll and others.
