Andres Segovia
Andrés Segovia was a Spanish guitarist, guitar teacher, and editor of guitar music. He was born on February 21, 1893, in Linares, Spain, and died on June 2, 1987, in Madrid. Segovia began giving concerts in Spain at the age of fourteen, and he contributed to the popularity of classical guitar during his worldwide tours. Segovia's influence on the development of classical guitar playing in the 20th century was immense. He played an important role in making the classical guitar a respectable concert instrument. Segovia inspired many composers to write music for the guitar, including Joaquín Rodrigo, Manuel María Ponce, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Segovia taught guitar at various universities, and many notable guitarists, such as John Williams and Christopher Parkening, were his students.
